In 1958, María Ana Garza Barrientos obtained her Biology degree. She was one of the first students at the College of Biological Sciences and the second one to obtain a degree from this College.

Biol. Garza Barrientos founded the College’s Phycological Herbarium. The collection includes more than 7000 specimens from all over the world, including algae from Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, France, and Canada.

For over 20 years, Biol. Garza Barrientos taught the courses of general botany, plant histology, and plant anatomy.
